Once in a lifetime
The complete Bwiti initiation traditionally takes place only once in a lifetime. It aims to facilitate a life review and give a direction for the future, through the transformative experience of the iboga root.
Effects by dose
- Low dose: heightened perception, prolonged wakefulness.
- High dose: severe nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, visionary experience. The initiate lives what is described as a passage and confrontation with mortality — described as painful rather than pleasurable.
The Ebando framework
Ebando insists on three conditions: preparation (4 days), human guidance (7 officiants, nganga, maboundi, Tatayo), follow-up (exit vigil, possibility of contact after return).
This approach is culturally rooted: it is not an "iboga therapy" taken out of its context, but the integration of the individual into a transmission that is centuries old.
